16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that takes place from November 25 to December 10. This global initiative aims to raise awareness, mobilize communities, and encourage concrete actions to end all forms of gender-based violence. It brings together organizations, governments, communities, and citizens around a common goal: promoting equality and building a future free from violence.
Key Dates of the Campaign
November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
This day marks the official launch of the 16 Days. It highlights the urgency of taking action to protect the fundamental rights of women and girls worldwide.
December 6 – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
In Canada, this date honors the victims of the 1989 Polytechnique tragedy and all women and girls who have been victims of femicide. In Prescott-Russell, it is also proclaimed as the Day of NON-Violence, emphasizing the importance of collective commitment to preventing violence and promoting equality in relationships.
December 10 – Human Rights Day
This day closes the campaign by reminding us that the fight against gender-based violence is inseparable from the defense of universal human rights. It calls on everyone to continue taking action beyond the 16 Days and to commit to building a more just and inclusive society.
Wear White Ribbon
The White Ribbon Campaign is recognized worldwide as the largest movement of boys and men coming together to end all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination. Since its creation, it has stood as a call to responsibility and action: to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls.
Being an ally means continuously working to end violence, harassment, and discrimination for everyone.
This means taking concrete action to end harassment, violence, and discrimination, while also promoting respect, listening, and equity in all areas of life.
