The Prescott-Russell Coalition to End Violence Against Women expresses its deep concern following the recent decision by the Canadian government to eliminate the position of Minister for Women and Gender Equality. This decision is not only bewildering but also undermines essential efforts to combat violence against women and advance gender equality in our society.
Even today, women continue to face systemic violence in all spheres of society. Whether at home, on the street, or at work, women are victims of physical, psychological, sexual, and economic violence. Violence against women is an omnipresent and extremely serious issue that requires ongoing attention and action at all levels of government. The Ministry for Women and Gender Equality was an important source of information, resources, and funding to effectively address these critical issues on the ground. The Canadian government has taken a step back by eliminating this ministry, a move that sends a concerning message about the priority given to combating violence against women.
The Prescott-Russell Coalition to End Violence Against Women calls on the Canadian government to reverse this decision and restore a ministerial position specifically dedicated to combating violence against women and promoting gender equality. It is imperative that coherent public policies and adequate resources be allocated to the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence. Organizations working on the ground cannot function effectively without a clear and structured commitment from government authorities. Moreover, the elimination of this ministry threatens to further marginalize women, particularly francophone women, Indigenous women, and those from racialized communities, who are most vulnerable to extreme forms of violence.
We reaffirm our commitment to working in partnership with all organizations and individuals who share a vision of a society free from violence against women, and we will continue to work every day to ensure a safer environment for all women.
